Thanks to the wonder of*, I know exactly what I listened to in 2008. I'm too old to care about the music papers, have given up on 6music (apart from Adam and Joe) and have relied on and Twitter as musical radar.

Most listened to bands

  1. Belle and Sebastian
  2. Stereolab
  3. Blur
  4. The Smiths
  5. The Beach Boys
  6. The Beatles
  7. The Beta Band
  8. The Byrds
  9. The Kinks
  10. The Young Knives

Do more band names begin with a B than any other letter? It seems like quite a conservative list, but most of those bands have been serving me well for 20 years, no need to change now.

Most listened to songs

  1. The Young Knives – Rollerskater
  2. Boney M. – Rasputin
  3. Interpol – Length of Love
  4. Erlend Øye – Sheltered Life
  5. The Beatles – Fixing a Hole
  6. Stereolab – Wow and Flutter
  7. The Dandy Warhols – Everyday Should Be A Holiday
  8. Erlend Øye – A While Ago and Recently
  9. Belle and Sebastian – White Collar Boy
  10. Fleet Foxes – Quiet Houses
  11. Paul McCartney & Wings – Jet
  12. Radiohead – Backdrifts

You could get a good party started with that playlist. There's something in there for everyone. So all year the only new bands I've listened to are Fleet Foxes, Neon Neon, The Shortwave Set and Friendly Fires. Plus new albums by old artists Elbow, Glen Campbell and Grace Jones. The rest of 2008's musical output has totally passed me by. What did I miss?

* Please be my friend. I like seeing what other people are listening to.

Maybe there are more B bands? I haven't counted them though..

I'll admit that I've only started listening to them after everyone else has started banging on about them (the musical equivalent of the Wire) - TV on The Radio. Both of their last albums are high on my listening list. I have rediscovered Hail To The Thief by Radiohead, which post In Rainbows I think is utter genius. As is Liquid Swords by The Gza.
Guilty pleasure: that first Keane single: whoooooooooo

Thanks Mark. Seconded about that Keane single. Not like their usual dreary output. Never heard of The Gza but will check 'em out. I'm sure I've got a TV on the Radio CD somewhere. Must look...

I think my top five were . . .

Max Tundra "Parallax Error Beheads You"
Hot Chip "Made In The Dark"
Late Of The Pier “Fantasy Black”
Fonda 500 “Je M'appelle Stereo"
The Streets "Everything Is Borrowed"

Ignore or investigate at your leisure.

DW x

Nice to see Stereolab in there Anne. We went to see them last week - not seen them for years - or anyone actually - it was incredible. They rock! (Surprisingly).

DW - I like Hot Chip, haven't heard the rest. Thanks for the tips.

Richard - Good to know ver 'lab can still groove. I kind of lost track with their later albums but have been working my way through their early ones this year. They take some beating! Do you like Electrelane? Their name keeps coming up.

Here's a few you missed

MGMT - Electric Feel
Chairlift - Bruises
Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma
Weezer- Pork & Beans
Florence & the Machine - Kiss with Fist
Supergrass - Rebel in You
Wiley - Wearing my Rolex
Dizzee Rascal ft Calvin Harris -Dance wiv me

A B band I've overplayed this year is The Bird and The Bee (first album, anyway).

Not a B band, but do you ever listen to Camera Obscura? I think you'd like them.

Only album I've played a lot this year that actually camer out this year was the Fleet Foxes one. Other than that, my top three were probably Tunng, Fink and then just random girl groups on compilations.

You missed the debut ep from [full disclosure, my band] Dylan Trees. It's on iTunes...

Pathetically I am in my own top ten. Only because I load unfinished mixes into iTunes before listening to them.

I think you might like the easy listening instrumental versions - tracks 5-8 if you download on iTunes.

Less egocentrically, I really enjoyed the new Clientele ep.

What a great interesting site, got here through a websearch on innerleithen, pearces juice of innerleithen
keep up the good work from the village of innerleithen (scottish borders)
