Whitby was wet. Really wet.

Whitby Rock

But still, it rocked.

Clear black lines to win

So when it's wet, go to the amusements. That's the rule, isn't it? In all honesty, amusements do my head in. Too much noise and distraction. But these were great because there were so many 2p puggies and they looked so great.

Whitby Steam Bus

Plus a ride on a Steam Bus. Not many of them around.

Whitby is wonderful, and so are your photographs. But I have to admit that the term 'puggies' left my southern mind boggling. Aren't they monkeys? But I think I see what you mean from the picture.

Ah, sorry Philip. I should translate. A puggy is a slot machine in Scots.

To be fair, that isn't a proper puggy in the picture. It should really be something upright like a fruit machine. But near enough!

Thanks, Anne. I like learning new words. In fact I feel the need of a Scots-English dictionary. Although Chambers (my favourite English dictionary) has quite a few Scots words, it's clearly far from exhaustive.

I don't think there is a definitive dictionary or a definitive website. Too many disagreements about slang/dialect etc. I imagine.
